Food Safety

Should admit that this is only one good thing that MM(moderator nickname) done so far. Keep up the good work! What is food technology? How is this technology linked with all other technologies mentioned in this website? Let us think for a moment.

Food Technology is the application of Food Science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe, nutritious, and wholesome food. Food Science is a discipline in which the biological and physical sciences and engineering are used to study the nature of foods, the causes of their deterioration, and the principles underlying food processing. It gained importance because consumers want convenience, quality, and innovative food products. Health is considered important but not at the expense of taste or flavor. Increased attention to health along with the unavailability of unique foods plus strong consumer demand created the need for convenience foods. Consumers demand for information about food preparation, food service and nutrition. An advance in technology is also a challenge to the food industry. All these factors lead to new foods in the market. When food enters the chain before reaching consumer it becomes a real threat if it is not handled safe!!!!

There are many deaths, illnesses associated with food every year. America is considered one of the safest nations which serve food to the public with less risk. But even here many deaths and illnesses are reported each year by CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention). Food scientists and experts are striving hard to reduce or stop the harm which is caused by consuming unsafe food. Hence their main focus now is food safety………Safety first!!! There might be lot of questions why food is not safe? Previously they thought it’s only by improper handling now the real danger is bioterrorism/agro terrorism. Example: Bovine spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease which affects the nervous system of the cattle and is extremely fatal to both animals and humans.

Feedback are welcome to make every bite a safe bite.

Thanks Mr.Anonymous for the post. It would be interesting if you could share more information about how exactly the "food chain is in risk" and the steps taken by USDA.
